North Shore Oahu Beaches

Escape to the North Shore, a beach-lover’s paradise! With miles of golden sand, world-famous surf breaks, and breathtaking sunsets, this region offers some of the most stunning beaches on Oahu. Among them, Sunset Beach stands out as a must-visit destination.

Overview of Sunset Beach

Looking for the perfect North Shore getaway? Sunset Beach is one of Oahu’s crown jewels, offering two miles of pristine shoreline and a laid-back island vibe. Located just a short drive from Haleiwa Town, this beach is perfect for families, couples, adventure-seekers, and beachgoers looking for a classic Hawaiian experience.

Depending on the season, Sunset Beach transforms:

  • Winter (November – March): Home to towering surf breaks that attract professional surfers worldwide. Waves can reach 20-30 feet, making it one of the best places to watch big-wave surfing.
  • Summer (April – October): The ocean calms down, making it an excellent spot for swimming, snorkeling, and turtle-watching.

With its vast stretch of golden sand and unobstructed views, Sunset Beach is one of the best places on Oahu to watch a breathtaking Hawaiian sunset.

Be Safe

While Sunset Beach is stunning, safety is key:

  • Rip Currents: The “Sunset Rip” is a well-known hazard, especially during winter. Pay attention to ocean conditions and lifeguard warnings.
  • Big Waves: During peak surf season, waves can reach up to 25 feet. Standing near the shore break can be dangerous, as rogue waves can knock you off your feet.
  • Stinging Limu (Seaweed): This itchy, stinging seaweed blooms from June to September, so be mindful while swimming.

Directions to Sunset Beach

Enter "Sunset Beach State Park" into your GPS for easy navigation.

  • From Honolulu/Waikiki: Take H-1 West → Merge onto H-2 North → Follow Kamehameha Highway (HI-83) along the coast. The drive takes about an hour, depending on traffic.
  • Landmarks: Sunset Beach is just past Waimea Bay and before Turtle Bay Resort. If you reach Turtle Bay, you’ve gone too far.
  • Parking Tip: There’s a free parking lot across the street, but it fills up quickly. Additional roadside parking is available, but be careful crossing the road.

Amenities at Sunset Beach

Family-Friendly Activities

Sunset Beach is an excellent spot for families, offering plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the day.

  • Summer: Calm waters make it perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and tide pooling.
  • Winter: While the waves are too rough for swimming, kids love watching professional surfers take on the massive swells.
  • Nearby attractions: Explore nearby activities like a Toa Luau, scenic hikes, and a day trip to Haleiwa Town.

Sunset Beach Activities

  • Snorkeling with Turtles (Summer Only): Clear, calm waters reveal abundant marine life, colorful reefs, and sea turtles.
  • International Surfing Contests (Winter): Sunset Beach has prestigious surfing competitions, including the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
  • Surfing (Advanced Only): The winter months provide powerful, world-class waves for skilled surfers. Beginners should avoid the water and instead check out less intense breaks at nearby beaches.
  • Sunset Watching: No trip is complete without witnessing the breathtaking sunset that gives this beach its name.
