The Honolulu Museum of Art is a collection of stunning cultural pieces developed by local artists and expressive of the island’s deep, rich culture. As a collection, the museum includes Hokusai, van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Picasso, and Warhol, as well as traditional Asian and Hawaiian art.
The Honolulu Museum of Art was founded in 1922 by Anne Rice Cooke, who lived on the island for years and developed a deep passion for art from an early age. The museum first began as Anne’s home collection with her husband Charles Cook, but it soon began to outgrow their home, leading them to come up with another solution that led them to found the museum that so many visitors and locals treasure.
The museum quickly grew to be one of the United States’ most well-known museums and certainly the most famous in all of Hawaii. Unassuming from the outside, the museum itself offers far more than the main gallery; explore the rich artistic expressions, then meander through the education wing, a gift shop, care, and even a theater. There’s even a studio for workshops and classes.
The museum itself is located in Honolulu, which is on the southeastern quarter of the island of Oahu. To get to the Honolulu Museum of Art, head south on I-H 1 E, then take I-H-201 east and then I-H-1 east to Kinau Street in Honolulu. After a few minutes, take exit 22 from I-H-1 east.
