La'ie Falls - A Scenic Hike to a Tropical Oasis

The Rich History of La'ie
La'ie is more than just a beautiful hiking destination—it’s also a town with deep cultural and historical significance. In the mid-1800s, Mormon settlers migrated to Hawaii, seeking a peaceful place to establish a community. By 1865, they had acquired approximately 6,000 acres in La'ie, where they built a temple inspired by the Salt Lake Temple in Utah. Today, La'ie remains a Mormon heritage and culture center, home to Brigham Young University-Hawaii and the world-renowned Polynesian Cultural Center.
La'ie is a peaceful little seaside village on the northeastern tip of the island. It's most widely known for its large Mormon influence.
In 1865, the Mormons bought 6000 acres of land and eventually built a temple similar to the one in Salt Lake City. Laie Falls is a 15-foot waterfall on the La'ie Ridge Trail. It is the first major stop on the hike, where more hikers take a dip and then head back out.
The trailhead is on Kamehameha Highway 83 at marker #55. The trail begins as a graded four-wheel-drive road.
Hiking the Scenic Trail to La'ie Falls
The La'ie Falls Trail is a 7-mile round-trip hike with an elevation gain of about 1,200 feet. It is classified as a moderate to challenging hike, making it ideal for those with some hiking experience. The trail features steep inclines, muddy terrain, and rocky sections, but the reward at the end—a serene waterfall and swimming hole—makes the effort worthwhile.

Directions to La'ie Falls Trailhead
Getting to the trailhead is straightforward:
- Take Kamehameha Highway (Hwy 83) to mile marker #55.
- Turn onto Naniloa Road from Kamehameha Highway.
- Follow Naniloa Road until you reach Poohaili Street.
- Drive about 1.5 miles until you see the marked trailhead on your left.
Since the trail is on private property, respect the land and follow all regulations.
