Gorgeous Ho'okipa Beach Park

The steady winds on the North shore produce the best kite surfing and windsurfing on the island. Witness the captivating, dramatic surf break that emerges from the reef system stretching across the bay. Come to Ho'okipa Beach for world-renowned windsurfing and daredevil water moves.

Overview of Ho'okipa Beach Park

Hookipa—the Windsurfing Capital of the World—hosts a large surfing community where sand is dotted with black rocks. The beach boasts unsurpassed views of Maui's craggy central coastline and lush West Maui Mountains. Sunbathing, beach walking, picnicking, turtle watching, and surfing are popular activities at Hookipa.

Hookipa Beach's mornings are the optimal time to enjoy its beauty. If you come in December, you can watch surfers doing tricks on big waves and enjoy breathtaking sunsets. Also, keep an eye out for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles that often bask in the sun on the shoreline. Many see it as the turtle beach park.

Directions to Ho'okipa Beach Park

Take Highway 36 for about six miles from Kahului, and turn left when you approach the sign. You will find the beach on your left. You will soon come across the Lookout, which will take you to the beach. For parking, continue up the road and make a left into the parking lot from the park.

Essential Tips for a Ho'okipa Beach Park Visit

Ho'okipa means "hospitality," but large waves, dangerous rip currents, and crowds of strong surfers make this beach a challenge for most. We recommend paddling out with a local to ease your way into this break. If you wish to venture out on some of the world's largest waves, ensure you have the experience and know-how for paddling. If you don't know where the waves break, ask a local or the on-duty lifeguard about the rip tides.

Fun Activities to Keep You Entertained at Ho'okipa Beach

Family Activities at Ho'okipa Beach Park

Unlike other beaches in Maui, visitors come here to watch surfers perform crazy stunts on their surfboards! Head to picnic tables or the Ho'okipa Lookout for all the spectators to catch the best views of earth-defying moves and nature's power. You can also catch glimpses of green sea turtles and monk seals from the cliff, and make sure to give these sea creatures their respectful space.

Additionally, the family can enjoy local cuisine served by the food trucks here. Overall, we suggest limiting your time at this beach. There are better beaches for water activities and relaxation for families.

Ho'okipa Beach Park Activities

Professional windsurfing competitions: The area holds a stiff competition for skilled surfers and windsurfers. Competitors appreciate the area's four main breaks, each possessing its characteristics. Check out the most widely-watched contests globally, including the annual Hookipa Surf Classic, the Red Bull King of the Air, and The Aloha Classic.

Swimming & playing: For a safe option, head to the beach's center, where kids enjoy playing in the shallow tidepools present there. Alternatively, head to the Pavilion's side to swim in the small areas of shallow sandy-bottom shores. Don't venture too far off the coasts.

Surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing: Hookipa offers some of the largest waves in the world, reaching 25 feet during northerly swells. Hence, the persistent wind here calls kitesurfers and windsurfers to the best, epic rides of their lives. As such, we recommend paddling out with a local to ease your way into this break.

Watch the sea life: You can see many different marine creatures in this water, including sea turtles, seals, starfish, tropical fish, coral, sea horses, sea urchins, dolphins, and even whales from a distance.

Ho'okipa Lookout: Ho'okipa Lookout (viewpoint) provides a good view of northwest Maui (to your left) and the Pacific Ocean stretching to the north in front of you. It offers an excellent vantage point for watching surfers and windsurfers catch the waves below you on Ho'okipa Beach.

Take a stroll: A morning or evening stroll along the ocean is a perfect way to relax and exercise simultaneously. Locals do it first thing in the morning or at the end of the day.

Have a picnic: The beach hosts several picnic pavilions with BBQ grills and tables. Alternatively, you can enjoy a picnic on the soft sand.

Ho'okipa Beach Walk: The 1.1-kilometer stroll takes you through a back trail near Paia, Maui, Hawaii. The trail offers scenic views and is suitable for all skill levels. The course is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips.

Nearby Attractions and Sights

Paia Town: Found near the beginning of the Road to Hana, Paia Town is great for people-watching, food, and unique shopping.

Twin Falls: Head to Wailele Farm to witness several spectacular waterfalls. Twin Falls is a worthwhile excursion for anyone trying to see tropical jungles on Maui but who doesn't have that much time to spend on the Road to Hana. This biodiverse orchard is stellar to witness.
