Palauea Beach - White Rocks Beach

Palauea Beach, a private paradise,  is your ticket to relaxation. Palauea means 'lazy,' which describes the lovely south Maui beach. Located off Makena Road, this medium-sized beach goes relatively unused.

Overview of Palauea Beach

Palauea Beach—also known as White rock beach- located in a residential area rests between Makena and Wailea. We recommend snorkeling connoisseurs take a dip at this spot. The lava rocks present here create colorful marine life for ocean exploration, and tropical fishes and sea turtles often congregate in this area. Happy snorkeling!

Though only 300 yards long, the gentle slope makes for good swimming conditions, especially when the ocean is calm. Residents mainly use this beach-making less crowded than neighboring beaches on weekdays.

Directions to Palauea Beach

Palauea Beach sits south of the Kea Lani Beach Hotel and the Polo Beach Club. Access "White Rock" beach by taking the road through Wailea. Travel along Wailea Alanui Drive as the road bends to the left, and continue to the bottom until you arrive at the beach access path, which leads through the kiawe trees.

You can find available public parking on the side of Makena Road. You can't see the beach from the road, but look for the port-a-potty and large boulders where the path meets the road. The beach is located about 100 feet from the access road.

Essential Tips for a Great Palauea Beach Visit

We recommend that visitors take certain precautions regarding the following:

Dangerous currents: Palauea Bay, a recessed bay, doesn't get as windy as some other south Maui beaches; however, it is virtually impossible to swim safely in the bay during high waves. The water turns quite dangerous during a Kona storm or large wave since they create rip currents that can pull you downstream and into the water. Additionally, the bay lacks any on-duty lifeguards.

Location and access: Private homeowners have taken over much of this coastline. Visitors may find it challenging to access the beach, as it is not clearly marked and easily accessible. To reach it, make your way through a small grove of trees.

Your valuables: Lastly, never leave any valuables in your car or unattended on the beach.

Palauea Beach Amenities

The area lacks any facilities except for a porta-potty by the trailhead. Bring your toilet paper and antiseptic wipes. Alternatively, consider the two-minute drive to Polo Beach, where showers and restrooms are present.
