The gorgeous island of Maui is home to the Hana Airport (HNM). It is located about 3 miles northwest of the unincorporated town of Hana, one of the most isolated communities in the entire state. It encompasses a 119-acre site which hosts unscheduled air taxi, commuter, and general aviation activities. Mokulele Airlines provides the airport's scheduled passenger service. The airport was originally opened in 1935 in Hamoa, and consisted of just a small grass field, but was relocated to its current location in 1950 in order to accommodate larger aircraft. The State of Hawaii's Department of Transportation owns and operates the facility.
Hana Airport has a single asphalt runway which sees an average of 15 passengers per day. You may be thinking that's not a lot of traffic- and you'd be correct, of course! However, the airport is a very important part of the community; for instance, the strenuous drive from Kahului to Hana takes over two hours, but taking advantage of the twice-daily flights reduces travel time to a speedy 20 minutes.

As Hana airport is very small, there is no public transportation, taxi service, or rental car service available, so you'll need to make other travel arrangements. On the plus side, we guarantee you won't get lost in a maze of crowds, walkways, and shops- the terminal here is a nice one-room building that you won't miss. And although there are no restaurants or shops at the Hana airport, there are vending machines and restrooms for your convenience. And, because there is not a lot of traffic, there is ample free parking. So although the Hana Airport might not be on the proverbial radar of many travelers to Maui, it is most certainly an essential part of the Hana area. We hope you get the opportunity to visit this quaint little airport in paradise.
