Koki Beach and Alau Island

On Highway 31, over a half mile past mile marker 51 beyond Hana town, you'll come to a road on the makai side of the highway named Haneo'o Road.

The hill to your left is actually an eroding cinder cone known as Ka Iwi o Pele (the bones of Pele). Driving down Haneo'o Road, the rugged cliffs give way to a beautiful coastal view. As you continue down towards the shore youll notice Alau Island offshore. From this vantage point it looks like a rather small island with a few trees perched on top.

About 100 yards down the road as it starts to level off, you'll notice a pull off to the left. This is the Koki Beach overlook. From here you can also get an excellent view of Alau Island with its swaying palms directly offshore. Look to your left and you'll also be able to view a sea arch off in the distance on the rocky coast. Use caution swimming. Take Highway 360 past Hana. Turn left on Haneo'o Road. Koki Beach is the first beach on the left. Be sure to also continue further down the road to Hamoa Beach.
