Best Places To Get Haupia Pie In Hawaii

You shouldn’t need help deciding whether or not you want to eat chocolate haupia cream pie. That being said, you may never have heard of the desert, let alone have any idea where to get it.

Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian dessert made from coconut milk. The texture is like a thick pudding, almost flan-like, gelatinous, but sturdy enough to hold in your hand and take bites out of. And, of course, the flavor is simply ridiculous.

Add that to a pie with rich chocolate, whip cream, and - okay, you’re convinced. Let’s find out how to obtain a slice or three of this life-altering substance during your visit to the Hawaiian Islands, whichever island you happen to be visiting.

Oahu

Three legendary spots steal the show for the best chocolate haupia pies on the island of Oahu.

Honolulu’s Liliha Bakery has been open since 1950 and has appeared on our recommendation lists for its variety of delicious foods. Among many other things, you can buy and take home whole pies here, and they are the quintessence of classic Hawaiian chocolate haupia.

Liliha Bakery has several locations on Oahu. Check their website for addresses and hours.

You’ll also find Ani’s Bake Shop not far away in Aiea. Not only do they make a tasty chocolate haupia pie, but a sweet potato haupia pie as well! This is an excellent and friendly place to buy and enjoy a wide range of baked goods. Find them at 99-840 Iwaiwa Street, open Monday through Friday, 5 am to 1 pm, and Saturdays, 6 am to 12 pm.

Ted's Bakery is a classic favorite among dessert-craving visitors to the Island of Oahu.

First of all, the location is gorgeous. Ted’s Bakery is located right by Sunset Beach in Haleiwa. Second, the pies here are many, and all are completely drool-inducing. Of course, chocolate haupia pie in its most classic form stars at the front of the lineup; but you’ve also got blueberry cream pie, chocolate custard pie, pineapple macadamia nut cheesecake...the list goes on. See for yourself!

Ted’s Bakery is open every day from 8 am to 6:30 pm at 59-024 Kamehameha Hwy.

Maui

On the island of Maui, they make their pie easy to locate, with shop names like Maui Pie in Kihei. What do you suppose they sell there? Well, you’re right!

It’s not just chocolate haupia pie - it’s a whole menu of nothing but fresh pie. If you’re hankering for a pie of any kind, this should be the first spot on your Maui list. Maui Pie is located in the Azeka Shopping Center and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 8 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm.

Another easily identified spot can be found towards the west in Lahaina. Leoda’s Kitchen & Pie Shop is an excellent lunch destination, and when you finish, their pie menu is everything your dreams are made of. Of course, chocolate haupia pie is available by the slice, and so are quite a few other crazy-appetizing options.

Leoda’s is currently only offering takeout, but you can order online. They’re located at 820 Olowalu Village Road and open every day from 10 am until 6 pm.

Kauai

Haupia pie is a little trickier to find on The Garden Island. One place whose visitors rave about the haupia pies is Village Snack Shop & Bakery in Hanalei.

You can buy tons of different foods here (including malasadas), and both chocolate and vanilla haupia slices are on the bakery’s menu.

Village Snack Shop & Bakery is located in the Ching Young Village Shopping Center, and they’re open every day except Wednesday from 7:30 am to 4 pm.

This isn’t the kind of food that is particularly hard to convince visitors to try. The appeal is obvious - but don’t think it’s nothing more than a guilty pleasure. Haupia is a real-deal traditional Hawaiian original. It can be hard to find, if not impossible, outside the islands, and of course, the best can be experienced right at the source.

That being said, it’s also possible to make this dessert at home, provided you’re staying somewhere with a good kitchen. It only requires readily available ingredients and some basic baking skills. It’s not going to taste like Ted’s or Liliha’s, but hey - with these ingredients, it’s hard to go wrong.
