Hula Arts at Kīlauea

A monthly cultural showcase at the Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park offers visitors an immersive experience of traditional Hawaiian hula in a breathtaking natural environment. Typically occurring on the third Saturday of each month, these performances occur at the kahua hula (hula platform) near the Volcano Art Center Gallery, just a short walk from the Kīlauea Visitor Center.

The event is deeply rooted in Hawai'i's cultural heritage. Hula hālau (schools) from across the islands perform ancient hula (hula kahiko) in a setting that overlooks the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, the legendary home of the goddess Pele. This outdoor venue was inspired by the vision of the late hula master Edith Kanaka‘ole, making it a sacred and significant location for both performers and audiences.

The performances are free to the public, though park entrance fees apply. These events are presented without electronic amplification, allowing the natural sounds of the environment to enhance the traditional chants and movements of the hula dancers. Spectators are encouraged to bring mats and gear for sun or rain as the performances go on, regardless of weather conditions.

This event offers a unique opportunity to experience the profound connection between hula, nature, and Hawaiian spirituality in one of the island's most awe-inspiring locations.
