2024 Events & Festivities

As summer fades into fall, Kauai's festive spirit shows no signs of slowing down. This September, The Garden Island is buzzing with activities, offering various cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and relaxed good times.

Many of these lively events are hosted or sponsored by local businesses and organizations, providing a fantastic opportunity to enjoy your visit while supporting the local community. Educational events like the week-long Mokihana Festival offer the chance to deepen your knowledge and perhaps even pick up new skills.

So, without further ado, here are our top picks for the best events and festivals on Kauai in September 2024.

Kauai Mokihana Festival

This festival is a vibrant, week-long celebration of Hawaiian culture on Kauai. Organized by the Mālie Foundation, it is rich in tradition and offers various activities, including educational lectures, music, chants, and competitive hula performances.

The festival starts with a Hawaiian church service at the historic Kapaʻa First Hawaiian Church, established by Queen Deborah Kapule in 1879. Throughout the week, attendees can participate in workshops on traditional Hawaiian chants (Oli) and hula, including a special hula workshop led by Kumu Hula Kuʻualohanui Kauliʻa. These workshops are held at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort.

One of the festival's highlights is the hula competition, which occurs over two days at the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall. The competition features both traditional (Kahiko) and modern (ʻAuana) hula styles, with groups and soloists from various hālau (hula schools) showcasing their talents. The event also includes a craft fair, providing a unique opportunity to purchase local handmade goods.

The festival's theme for 2024, "A Year of Songs and Chants of Hawaii," emphasizes the deep connection between Hawaiian music and cultural identity. This theme will be explored in the composer's contest and concert, where new Hawaiian songs are celebrated.

This festival is an excellent opportunity for visitors and locals to immerse themselves in Hawaiian culture and support the local community.
