A Tree of Many Forms
The ʻōhiʻa lehua tree is incredibly diverse in its growth habits, living up to its species name, polymorpha, which means “many forms.” It can grow as a towering tree reaching over 80 feet in height or as a small, twisted shrub, depending on its environment. It thrives from sea level to over 8,000 feet in elevation, making it one of the first species to colonize new lava flows and an essential part of Hawaii’s native forests.
One of the most distinctive features of the ʻōhiʻa lehua is its vibrant flowers, which range in color from the iconic fiery red to yellow, orange, and even rare shades of pink. These blossoms are an important nectar source for native Hawaiian honeycreepers, such as the ʻiʻiwi and ʻapapane, which play a vital role in pollination.

Heartbroken, Lehua pleaded with the gods to reunite them, and in response, they transformed her into the bright red blossom that grows on the ʻōhiʻa tree. It is said that if you pick a lehua flower, it will rain, symbolizing Lehua’s tears of grief.
